How to Play Spider Solitaire

Last updated: 12/6/2024

The goal is to create sequences of cards in descending order, all in the same suit (e.g., King, Queen, Jack, and so on down to Ace). Once a sequence is completed, it is automatically moved to a foundation pile. The game ends successfully when all eight foundation piles are filled.

The game starts with 10 columns of cards, with the first 4 columns containing 6 cards each and the remaining 6 columns containing 5 cards each. Only the top card in each column is face-up.

The remaining 50 cards are placed face-down in the stockpile. These are drawn in sets of 10 when no more moves are possible in the tableau.

These are empty at the start and are filled as suit-based sequences are completed.

Move and Arrange Cards: Arrange cards in descending order. For example, a 7 can be placed on an 8, but suits must match to create a movable sequence.

Reveal Hidden Cards: When a face-up card is moved, the card underneath it (if any) becomes face-up and playable.

Empty Columns: You can move any card or sequence of cards to an empty column.

Draw from the Stockpile: When no moves are available, draw 10 cards (one per column) from the stockpile. You can only do this until the stockpile is empty.

Strategies to Win Spider Solitaire

Plan Ahead: Consider future moves when placing cards. Avoid blocking key cards that will be needed later.

Clear Columns Early: Try to empty at least one column as soon as possible. Empty columns provide flexibility to move sequences.

Focus on Completing Sequences: Prioritize creating complete suit-based sequences instead of mixed-suit stacks.

Use the Stockpile Wisely: Avoid drawing cards from the stockpile prematurely. Exhaust available moves on the tableau first.

Undo Moves: If playing digitally, take advantage of the undo button to test different strategies without penalty.
